CORK FLOORING
While cork flooring has been in use for almost 100 years, it is currently making a comeback as consumers become increasingly focused on flooring sourced from renewable resources. Cork flooring is made from leftovers from the process of manufacturing corks for the wine industry. The material is sourced from the bark of a tree, which can be harvested every few years without damage.
Cork is a product with many advantages. While having an attractive appearance reminiscent of wood, it has a yielding, slightly spongy texture. Not only does this make it soft underfoot, but it also makes it a very quiet product. Cork is naturally resilient, with organic compounds from the cork tree giving it resistance to moisture, mold, insects and even fire. Modern cork flooring can also be treated with a sealant making it virtually 100% waterproof, allowing you to install cork flooring almost anywhere.
BAMBOO FLOORING
Bamboo flooring is a relatively new flooring product manufactured from the fast-growing bamboo plant. A finished bamboo floor has a very similar appearance to a hardwood floor, and is slightly harder. Once it has been treated and sealed, bamboo is also slightly more resistant to moisture and scratching than a hardwood floor. Engineered bamboo flooring is a special product that is made of a processed bamboo layer on top of a plywood plank. This product is extremely resilient while also being easy to install, as the planks simply ‘click’ together.
In comparison with hardwoods, bamboo also has a much lower price, with the downside that it cannot usually be refinished – leading to a product that usually has a 10-15 year lifespan.
However, some bamboo products can last for two decades or more if they are specially treated and maintained.
