CORK FLOORING
While cork flooring has been in use for almost 100 years, it is currently making a comeback as consumers become increasingly focused on flooring sourced from renewable resources. Made from leftovers from the process of manufacturing corks for the wine industry, the material is sourced from the bark of a tree, which can be harvested every few years without damage. This makes cork flooring a 100% sustainable product and a form of recycling!
While having an attractive appearance with colouring reminiscent of wood, it has a yielding, slightly spongy texture. Not only does this make it soft underfoot, but it also makes it a very quiet product. This could be great in areas with high traffic or for those living with people at risk of falls.
Its soft texture can make it more susceptible to scratching than wood, but otherwise cork is a naturally resilient product. Cork flooring is a great way to get some of the benefits of synthetic products in a natural material; organic compounds from the cork tree make your cork flooring resistant to moisture, mould, insects and even fire.
